How does knowing more than one language help/hinder your creative work?

I think the reason why I chose this prompt was because I actually feel that, despite not having a adept knowledge of more than one language I still have a relevant perspective.

I studied half a year of indonesian and 1 and a half years of French in year 7 and 8 at high school and literally retained like 0.000000000000003% of what we were taught. Looking back I would like to blame my teachers though I feel at the time it was really my understanding of english that was to blame. I knew the basics fairly well, it was just my understanding of proper grammar at times that failed me. Basically I was trying to update my vocabulary with new names for things even though I still hadn't even fully downloaded english so to speak.

Now it's different. It's been 9 years and I'm now more confident with english than I ever thought I would be. I believe having knowledge of a second language might help with my written expression and make my writing more eloquent.

The only way I can see knowledge of a second language hindering my creative work would be if I am unable to respectfully use the language in such a way is both both respectful to its heritage and its intended use.

In the future I wish to dabble in learning french and italian, at least enough so I can assimilate into the culture. I'd like nothing more then to live overseas and experience the culture first hand.
