Lost in translation: French Song Lyrics and their english translation. Is the meaning still there?

I first heard 'Crier Tout Bas' by Cœur De Bas when I saw the trailer for A Simple Favor and I have to say I found the song enchanting. I'm often drawn to music that's emotional as I find it soothing and it carries a certain weight. It's like listening to someone read you their secrets. They trust you to treat them kindly, to feel what they feel and to do right by these emotions that are often mutually felt.

I think what made me like the song was how it made me feel, the artist in the song seems to be discussing a relationship with someone who was once close. This is at least what I took away from listening to the track as a monolingual english speaker. 

I did study french for a period in high school but found the language hard to learn based on my own difficulties with english. After my Oral presentation in class I was rewatching a interview with Xi Xu, renowned author of Famine whom I have grown to love as a writer. In the interview she says that 'Language is just a tool' and 'all feelings are universal' which I found perfectly describes my understanding of the song.

Below I have included several translations. I found the meaning of each to be similar but amazing in how they slightly differ in meanings. I think it would be awesome to understand french enough to the point where I can understand the meaning of the song for myself as it does sound incredible even though I don't understand what shes saying, I know what she means. 

I also find it ironic that even as I seek to understand the meaning of the song in the original language I I am imposing a english translation which is all i have to use in order to understand the meaning. Can i trust english to give the true meaning?

I wonder if this is true for all music across cultures? Can I understand a song based off the overall mood and rhythm of the song or is this risky in that it forces a assumption on a song based off what I can understand.
