Writing Exercise 1.1

BLOG PROMPT:
"So there are two strands that intertwine in the notion of cosmopolitanism. One is the idea that we have obligations to others, obligations that stretch beyond those to whom we are related by the ties of kith and kind, or even the more formal ties of a shared citizenship. The other is that we take seriously the value not just of human life but of particular human lives, which means taking an interest in the practices and beliefs that lend them significance. People are different, the cosmopolitan nows, and there is much to learn from our differences. Because there are so many human possibilities worth exploring, we neither expect nor desire that every person or every society should converge on a single mode of life. Whatever our obligations are to others (or theirs to us) they often have the right to go their own way. As we'll see, there will be times when these two ideals - universal concern and respect for legitimate difference - clash. There's a sense in which cosmopolitanism is the name not of the solution but of the challenge." - Kwame Anthony Appiah, Cosmopolitanism

In light of the above quote, write a poem/essay/fiction piece on the studio's theme - The Particular Is The Universal.

My piece: DRAFT VERY DRAFTY

This little lonely world.
Sit alone on the train
by a window facing forward
Whats passed is history

coming back slowly
a line ether stops
or is infinite
and this bitter repetition
Over and over you

Carousels turning and turning
Jump and smell the air
Listen to the laughter
take polaroids of those
you love

    1. Thanks Sidney! I think I have something, little rough though but in my next draft I think I will try and move away from my stereotypes and zoom the poem in a bit and see where it goes

    2. I wish there was a like button to the previous post. Is it 'passed' or 'past', though, in the first stanza?

    3. That's a good question Sree, I think at the time I was trying to allude to history being dead so I was thinking 'passed' as in 'passed away' but despite that context it probably should be 'past'. I'll be sure to address that in my next draft.
